The Affordable Care Act — sometimes called Obamacare — is a major healthcare law that sets standards for individual health insurance plans across the country. Under ACA guidelines, Qualified Health Plans (QHPs) are required to cover ten categories of essential health benefits and provide what's known as minimum essential coverage. These plans are available through both state and federal marketplaces. Depending on your household income, you may also be eligible for premium tax credits that can significantly lower your monthly cost — in some cases bringing it to $0. For a full view of all QHP options in your state, you can also visit HealthCare.gov.
Short Term Medical plans are designed to provide temporary health coverage during gaps between more comprehensive insurance. It's important to understand that STM plans do not qualify as minimum essential coverage under ACA standards and may not include all ten essential health benefits. These plans generally do not cover pre-existing medical conditions and often come with financial limits on the benefits they provide. STM can be a useful bridge solution, but it should not be considered a long-term substitute for a full ACA-compliant health plan.
Fixed Indemnity plans pay you a set dollar amount for specific healthcare services — like doctor visits or hospital stays — regardless of the actual bill. These plans are meant to work alongside your primary health insurance, not replace it. They do not satisfy the ACA's minimum essential coverage requirement and should not be treated as a standalone health plan. If you currently receive or are eligible for Medicaid, it's worth checking whether indemnity plan payments could impact your existing benefits or eligibility status.

We help you compare plans from multiple top-rated carriers, but our selection may not represent every available option in your area. For a comprehensive view of all Qualified Health Plans offered in your state, we recommend visiting your state's official marketplace or the federal Health Insurance Marketplace at HealthCare.gov. Premium tax credits and subsidies are subject to eligibility requirements and may change based on your household income and family size. Our goal is to simplify the process and match you with the best options we carry — but the complete picture is always available through official channels.
